After sifting through multiple data sets, we were very intrigued by the archive that the Green Garage had kept and put together over the course of the last 3 years regarding their Energy usage, Waste management, and Water consumption and usage. The collection was rich in metadata such as notes, recordings, and videos specific to the day.
The Green Garage is a co-working community and business incubator located in Midtown Detroit dedicated to providing a home for a diverse group of businesses and nonprofits. As a triple-bottom-line business, they strive to make decisions that are good for the environment, good for the community and economically healthy. Green Garage opened in 2011 after two years of design work and two years of construction, and currently houses approximately 50 small businesses and nonprofit organizations.
The building was designed to be as green as possible, utilizing passive design principles, solar thermal heating and extensive repurposing of materials in the construction. As a result, they currently use about a tenth of the energy of a traditional office building, a tenth of the water and a tenth of the waste. They also track their usage in each of these areas on their Measurement Pages.
We started by taking inspiration from Green Garage’s data set on energy usage and conservation efforts, we wanted to extrapolate on the concept of generating energy, and becoming aware of your personal usage.
We wanted to create an informative and fun experience, incorporated into a common and popular activity in the given space.
Ping Pong.
Our main goal was to convert the sound waves produced from the ball bouncing on the table, into a usable form of energy that could be visualized in kilowatts, and into a universal unit, iPhone charge.
(1) iPhone charge = 1 kWh
Essentially, a scoreboard for your energy generation.
